Retained primitive reflexes can show up in school in ways that are easy to misunderstand. A child may seem distracted, clumsy, tired, emotional, messy, or unwilling to participate. In some cases, these signs are viewed as poor attention, lack of effort, or behavior problems. But sometimes, the child’s body is working harder than expected behind the scenes.

Some signs are easy to notice, like poor balance or difficulty catching a ball. Others are more subtle and may only appear during certain parts of the school day.
A child with trouble sitting still in class may not simply be choosing to move or feeling bored. Their body may be seeking input, trying to stay alert, or working to maintain posture. They may wrap their feet around chair legs, sit on one foot, lean on the desk, slide out of the chair, or constantly shift positions. This can be especially noticeable during carpet time, independent reading, writing tasks, or longer lessons.
Handwriting difficulties can also be a sign that the body is working too hard. A child may know what they want to say but struggle to get it onto paper. Teachers may notice a tight pencil grip, hand fatigue, messy letter size, poor spacing, slow writing speed, or avoidance of written assignments. Writing depends on more than the hand. It also involves postural control, shoulder stability, eye tracking, body awareness, and fine motor control.
Reading routines can be affected, too. Some children struggle with reading because of phonics, spelling, or language-based learning needs. Others may also have body-based challenges that affect how they use their eyes and posture during reading. Possible signs include losing their place, skipping lines, rubbing their eyes, moving their head while reading, avoiding longer reading tasks, or becoming tired quickly. These reading and visual tracking challenges do not automatically mean that a child has retained reflexes, but they may be worth considering when other signs are also present.
Transitions are often hard in school, especially for children who need more time to organize their bodies and attention. A child may do well during one activity but struggle when asked to stop, clean up, line up, or move to another room. This may look like refusing to switch tasks, becoming tearful or angry, needing repeated directions, freezing when the room becomes busy, or rushing ahead without waiting. These moments may point to emotional regulation challenges, sensory needs, or difficulty shifting from one body state to another.
Movement-based parts of the day can reveal more clues. During recess, PE, or hallway routines, a child may avoid playground equipment, dislike ball games, trip often, struggle with balance, or have trouble coordinating both sides of the body. A child with poor body awareness may bump into classmates, walk too close to others, drop items, or seem unaware of personal space. These behaviors can be misread as careless when they may be connected to motor planning or sensory processing.
One of the most important things for adults to remember is that body-based challenges can look like behavior. A child who avoids writing may be overwhelmed by the motor demands. A child who constantly moves may be trying to stay focused. A child who reacts strongly to a small change may be struggling to regulate.
This does not mean every school concern is caused by retained reflexes. It does mean repeated patterns are worth looking at more closely, especially when a child is bright, capable, and still working harder than expected.
